The Giving Tree
Join the community effort to make the holidays brighter for a local child in need this Christmas... participate in The Giving Tree.To help, pick an ornament off the tree at McDonald's in Peru, Streator and/or Oglesby. Then, drop off new, unopened toys, clothes or gift cards, along with the ornament you picked specifying gender and age, to any one of the following locations: Walgreens-Peru, Ottawa or Streator, Grace United Methodist Church-LaSalle, Park Presbyterian Church-Streator or the  Youth Service Bureau of IV-Ottawa. All presents must be unwrapped and returned by Dec. 21.

Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots
Every year the Marine Corps collects toys at various locations in the community.They want to ensure you that all toys will be given to local children. Box Locations will be at the following: Big Boys Tires & Service in LaSalle, HyVee in Peru, and the Peru Mall (center court). The wish list age group is infant to 13 years old and all toys should be new and unwrapped. 

MENDOTA - "Giving Tree"
The Friends of the library "Giving Tree" is up at the Graves-Hume Public Library. Friends and patrons of the library are asked to make a donation this holiday season to the library by purchasing an ornament to place on its Chirstmas tree. The donor's name will then be placed on a bookplate inside newly purchased circulating materials. Each and every donor's name will be honored in this way. Ornaments can be purchased in increments of $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, & $100. The FOL "Giving Tree" will be displayed on Jan. 1. 

PERU- DBSA Support Group
The DBSA (Depression, Bi-Polar, Anxiety, Association) of the Illinois Valley support group meets every first and third Monday of the month on the forth floor in conference room C from 6:30-8 p.m. at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru. For more information, call (815) 252-0200. 

LASALLE COUNTY - Medicare Beneficiaries
Attention Medicare Beneficiaries! You may qualify for money saving benefits through the Low Income Subsidy and Medicare Savings Programs. Both Programs have income and asset guidelines. PRINCETON- Diabetes Meeting Offered Monthly
Perry Memorial Hospital wants to provide information and support to those who are dealing with diabetes. Each month, on the 2nd Tuesday, Perry has an informational meeting to provide up-to-date guidelines and realistic ways to manage the diagnosis of diabetes. There will also be time at each meeting for open discussion and sharing of ideas. Please contact at (815) 876-4449 to register for this meeting.

MENDOTA - Free carriage rides
Friday and Saturday night, Dec. 19 and 20, Arabian Carriage is offer horse-drawn carriage Christmas lights tours in Mendota from 5:30 until 8 p.m. beginning in the parking lot across from Waterfalls Casual Dining! A free-will donation will be accepted to benefit Operation Elf Action, formally known as Toys for Tots. For more information, call the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce.

PRINCETON - BCGS Closed for the Holidays
The BCGS library will close for holiday vacation at the end of the day on Friday, Dec. 19 and not reopen until Friday, Jan. 2, 2015.  Those needing to use the library during that two week period may call to make an appointment at ( 815) 879-3133 during the normal hours of operation Monday,Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. or at (815) 303- 7386 at other times.  The library will be open for the first Saturdays on December 6 and January 3 during regular hours of operation.

LASALLE - FreeITAC Amplified Phones
Free amplified phones are available through the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation program (ITAC). Qualified individuals must be legal residents of Illinois, have a doctor’s or audiologist’s signature verifying hearing loss, and have standard phone service in the residence. There are no age or income restrictions. An open house is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 19 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. To get your application for a free ITAC phone, call the Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living or (IVCIL) at (815) 224-3126. Appointments are preferred but, walk-ins welcome. IVCIL is open 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

OTTAWA - Calvary's 1st Annual Pay it Forward Christmas Dinner
Calvary Baptist Church of Ottawa, IL will be hosting its 1st annual Christmas Dinner. This event will be open to the community and surronding areas. MENDOTA - Christmas steak fry
The Mendota VFW Post 4079 will hold a Christmas Steak Fry Saturday, Dec. 20, from 5:30 until 8 p.m. This fund raiser is open to the public, but reservations are requested. Cost is $15 per person and includes a steak, baked potato, salad with all the fixings and other extras. Attendees may cook their own steak or ask a member of the committee to cook it for them. Walk-ins are welcome. Call 539-6466 to make a reservation.

SPRING VALLEY - Holiday vendor fair benefit
A holiday vendor fair to benefit Jim Puyear will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, at Hall High School. Many local vendors will be on hand to help with last minute holiday shopping lists. There will also be a bake sale, raffle table and a 50/50 drawing. All proceeds from the fair will assit Puyear with medical needs.

PERU - Caring Friends Support Group
Alzheimer's Caring Friends Support Group will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the Red Cross Office on 4th Street in Peru. The meeting is open to caregivers, family and friends of those with alzheimer's.

MENDOTA - Christmas Church Tour
Mendota's First Christmas Church Tour, sponsored by the ministerial team and Jerry's Flower Barn in Mendota, will be held Sunday, Dec. 28. There is no charge for admission but free-will donations will be taken to benefit the Mendota Area Food Pantry. From 1:30 until 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 8, the community is welcome to tour the following local churches to see their beautiful Christmas decorations and architecture: 1st United Methodist Church in Mendota, Holy Cross Church, St. John's Lutheran Church, Zion Methodist, and Presbyterian Church. In the case of bad weather all functions will be canceled.

LOCKPORT - 44th Annual Old Canal Days Festival
The 44th annual Old Canal Days Festival, including the annual Arts & Crafts Show will be held on Saturday & Sunday, June 20 & 21, 2015. The juried arts & crafts  is on Saturday the 20th 10-5 p.m. and Sunday the 21st 10-4 p.m. Booth fees are $100 for standard and $120 for a corner.
