Peoria County Fire
A 74-year-old woman died after a fire in a mobile home in the Peoria County community of Norwood. The Peoria County Coroner says Margaret Waldbeesser was found inside the home. Authorities say an autopsy is expected to take place later today. Last night's fire was reported around 7:15 p.m. Authorities still aren't sure what sparked the blaze.
Putnam County Crash
A Peoria man had to be airlifted to the hospital after a traffic crash in Putnam County Tuesday morning. According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, 26 year old Joshua Lee Foster was southbound on Illinois Route 29 around 7 AM when his vehicle left the road and struck a tree. After being extricated by the Henry Fire Department, Foster was taken by life-flight to Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, where he was last listed in critical condition.
Snow, Rain Raise Flooding Concerns
With last evening's rainfall, overnight snowfall and temperatures forecast to be well-above freezing later this week, river levels are expected to be above or near flood stage. According to the National Weather Service Hydrologist Office, the Illinois River at La Salle hit minor flood stage Tuesday morning but is expected to crest late Thursday morning. The Illinois River in Ottawa is also expected to rise near minor flood stage but forecast to crest on Thursday morning. Officials advise those along the river to watch for rapidly changing river conditions.
DeKalb County Hit and Run
A DeKalb County Woman says an object thrown from another vehicle damaged her car. According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened shortly after 2 am Tuesday morning, near the intersection of Perry and Shabbona Roads. A 27 year old Big Rock woman says an approaching vehicle traveling in the opposite direction threw an object out the driver’s side window, striking her hood and shattering the windshield. The unknown vehicle fled the scene, and no injuries were reported.
A Pedestrian is dead, and a motorist injured in an early morning traffic crash. According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, 46 year old Clarence Robert Janecek the Third, of Maple Park, was killed, and 31 year old German Gonzalez, of DeKalb, was injured, in the crash on at the Intersection of Route 38 and Webster Road in Cortland. Deputies say when they arrived shortly after midnight this morning they found an individual lying in the road unresponsive, and a vehicle on the road to the north.
Republican contenders for governor are facing questions about their roles in a five-year-old admissions scandal at the University of Illinois. The scandal involved some politicians using clout to get students enrolled. State Treasurer Dan Rutherford and state Senator Kirk Dillard have acknowledged their names are on the list of lawmakers who called to check on applications.
New federal figures show about 114,000 Illinois residents signed up for coverage during the first five months of the nation's health insurance marketplace system. One third of those who signed up are ages 55 to 64. The open enrollment period ends March 31st.
UofI Space Man
University of Illinois graduate Mike Hopkins is back on Earth after six months in orbit. Hopkins and two Russian astronauts landed safely in Kazakhstan late Monday. They spent 166 days on the International Space Station.
Illinois Conservation Police is investigating the illegal killing last week of more than 30 ducks at the Carlyle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area near Vandalia. The ducks killed includes several northern pintails and mallards. Several ducks were left crippled. Duck hunting season closed Jan. 7 in South Central Illinois. Spring duck hunting was eliminated a century ago by the McLean-Weeks Act, which regulated the shooting of migratory birds in the United states.
