Gas prices have rose just before the Labor Day weekend in some areas. Triple A Chicago's Beth Mosher says an explosion at the BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana may keep prices a little higher over the next couple of weeks. However with a switch to winter blend gas towards the end of September will help prices drop. Prices remain lower in the La Salle-Peru area at $3.29 a gallon, while Ottawa and Streator stations have jumped to $3.49. Overall, gas in Illinois is averaging around $3.52
Health Care Premiums
A Sangamon County judge has issued a preliminary injunction barring Illinois from collecting higher health care insurance premiums from retired state employees. Officials say the withholdings should stop for checks going out October 1st. Unresolved is how to return premiums paid since last July.
Woman in Critical Condition following Accident
A Magnolia woman remains in critical condition following an accident this past weekend. Putnam County Sheriff's deputies say a three-wheeled motorcycle driven by 66-year old James Dilbeck of Magnolia was southbound on Illinois Route 89 Sunday near McNabb, when a car driven by a Streator woman turned out in front of the motorcycle, causing Dilbeck to hit the car. A passenger on Dilbeck's motorcycle, 62-year old Kathleen Dilbeck was taken to Saint Francis in Peoria, where yesterday, a hospital spokesperson said she is listed in critical condition. The Streator woman was charged with failure to yield.
A new men's basketball coach was announced Thursday at Illinois Valley Community College. President Jerry Corcoran (cork-ran) said Chris Herman was appointed the new men's basketball coach, promoted from his position as the assistant men's basketball coach following the resignation of former coach Tommy Canale (canal-ee). Herman was Canale's assistant for six seasons.
Canale recently resigned to take a job as a high school and college scout for Alabama-based National Scouting Report
High School Football starts again this weekend, and area teams will be hitting the gridiron tonight. Only a few local teams will be playing each other tonight, including Amboy Lamoille at St. Bede, and Bureau Valley at Hall. Other local schools playing this weekend, include Streator at East Peoria, LaSalle Peru at Lincoln Way North, Leo at Ottawa, Rich South at Mendota, Rockford Christian Life at Marquette, and Morrison at Princeton, Flanagan Cornell Woodland at Clinton, Dwight at Seneca, and Fieldcrest at Tri Valley.
