DeKalb County Fatal Accident
A southern DeKalb County woman was killed following a single-vehicle accident north of Waterman Tuesday afternoon. DeKalb County Sheriff's deputies say 79-year old Beverly Gainey was southbound on Illinois Route 23 near Elva Road, when her van drove off the right side of the road, struck a guardrail and flipped over and struck a culvert and slid into a creek. Authorities say Gainey had to be extricated from her vehicle and she was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, where she died early Wednesday morning. 

Authorities say speed and cell phone use have been ruled out as causes.

New Peru Theatre Plans Scrapped
Plans for a new, stand-alone theatre in Peru have officially been scrapped. Peru's Community Involvement Director Bob Vickery said following months of plans for the new theatre, which was planned to be built just north of HyVee, the trust company and the theatre company could not come to an agreement on a price. Vickery said prices were at an $875,000 gap and neither side was willing to budge closer to the other.

Carmike Cinemas, whose lease ends at the end of the year, is looking to extend with the Peru Mall.

Voting Could Come Today on Budget
The Illinois Senate could vote as early as Thursday on a plan to close a $1.6 billion state budget gap. The House already has passed the budget proposal to get Illinois through June. Lawmakers passed an incomplete budget last year and money for some agencies is running out.

Handgun Found on Carry-on at Midway
Security screeners at Midway International Airport have found a loaded .45-caliber handgun in a passenger's carry-on luggage. The Transportation Security Administration says the passenger was seeking to board a flight to New York's LaGuardia airport Tuesday and was arrested by local law enforcement. The weapon was the seventh firearm discovered in a carry-on at Midway so far this year.

Suburban Chicago Earthquake
The U.S. Geological Survey has reported a minor earthquake northwest of Chicago. The federal agency reports the tremor last night was centered near Lake in the Hills and measured 2.9 on the Richter scale. The USGS reports residents in Crystal Lake, Huntley, Woodstock and Elgin felt the quake.

Illinois' Typical Tornado Season Quiet
An Illinois weather expert says the phrase "tornado season" has lost some of its meaning during the past three years. State Climatologist Jim Angel says the recent distribution of tornadoes doesn't match the typical Illinois tornado season. It runs March through June. The year 2013 saw a massive tornado outbreak on November 17th. Two notable tornado outbreaks were in February and October in 2014.

Bloomington Homes for Homeless
Officials in Bloomington are discussing building tiny houses for homeless people. They're talking with social service providers about creating a small village of 350-square-foot homes along with a shared community building. Tiny house villages have been built in cities such as Madison, Wisconsin, and Olympia, Washington.
