OTTAWA – Workers doing construction around the Ottawa I&M Canal rewatering project struck a large gas main Tuesday morning forcing an evacuation of a motel and several area businesses. Around 8:00 a.m. the large main was ruptured near the Canal and LaSalle Street and emergency crews were called. No injuries were reported and evacuees were directed to Ottawa High School. Officials estimate NICOR will have the leak repaired and roads around the scene open to traffic by 1 p.m.
