The winningest boys’ basketball coach in Illinois history has died. Gene Pingatore gained national attention when he appeared in the 1994 documentary “Hoop Dreams.” He coached at St. Joseph High School in Westchester, a Chicago suburb. At the time of his death, he was preparing for his 51st season at the school. Pingatore was 83. He had 1,035 wins, 13 sectional titles, six top-four state finishes and two state championships and coached three McDonald’s All-Americans: Isiah Thomas, Daryl Thomas and Deryl Cunningham.
