SPRINGFIELD – legislation supported by state Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa making it easier for current and former men and women of our armed forces to obtain ID’s signifying they are veterans was signed into law.
“It is common sense to pass laws that make life easier for our veterans, which this new law will do,” said Yednock. “This law will help streamline government operations while providing better services for Illinois’ veterans.”
The Yednock-backed House Bill 3216 streamlines the Secretary of State Office’s (SOS) process to issue drivers licenses or identification cards (IDs) with the word “veteran” printed on them. Yednock’s law eases the process on qualified veterans by allowing the SOS to first issue IDs to them and then the nearest Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA) branch will certify veterans’ information from their DD-214 forms. The newly issued IDs can be cancelled if a DVA facility determines wrongdoing or misrepresentation from an applicant.
This legislation was recently signed into law by the governor.
“Veterans have put up with too much government red tape and bureaucracy, but this law helps mitigate that by cutting some obstacles,” said Yednock. “As a new member of the Illinois Veterans Advisory Council, I will continue to work passing new laws that will streamlines services that benefit our brave men and women.”
