UTICA – US Silica intends to idle its Utica facility on Sunday. According Spokesman Mike Lawson, changes in customer’s buying patterns is the reason for the deactivation. The company sees limited demand in that facility, stating customers would now rather buy closer to drilling activity, like Texas to save costs, as opposed to northern white sand. Lawson says it’s a market based decision that has been happening throughout the industry. The Utica facility was US Silica’s latest mine and processing plant. Finished goods reached customers via the BNSF or UP railroads.
