SPRINGFIELD – Illinois public health officials unfortunately have more on their plate than just the coronavirus. The Illinois Department of Public Health reported on Saturday that 23 cases across Illinois have been confirmed of what is a multi state outbreak of a food borne parasite. The disease, called cyclosporiasis, is suspected to be linked to consumption of store brand garden salads from 3 grocery store chains. Dr. Ngozi Ezike, the IDPH director, says that the first case began to appear in mid May.
IDPH officials say their initial investigation indicates a link to store brand packaged garden salads from Aldi, Hy-vee, and Jewel Osco stores in Illinois. Symptoms usually appear about a week after exposure, and can be treated with antibiotics, but if left untreated, the illness can last up to a month or longer.
