STREATOR – The city of Streator passed an ordinance adopting a rental inspection and permitting program earlier this week. Participating landlords incorporated their input to the program through a 2 page checklist created by the city. The checklist consists of life safety issues via a point based value assigned to each benchmark determining re inspection based off of the results from the checklist. A nominal fee of $25 dollars is owed for each inspection. If a landlord is in good standings and remains so, no additional costs will be owed during the next inspection period. City Manager Scot Wrighton says the goal of the council if for fees to fall disproportionately on properties that are in poor condition. Wrighton says this is one piece of a larger program the city if perusing to improve the housing stock in Streator.
