STREATOR – Crops in southern LaSalle County are showing the effects of a mostly dry summer. According to LaSalle County Farm Bureau President David Isermann, the recent rainfall this week only touched down in northern parts of the county, leaving crops south of the Illinois River dry. He says southern soybeans are loosing yield each day to dehydration, and corn is beginning to wilt prematurely. What’s needed now is a significant widespread rain to finish out the growing season. According to the National Weather Service, there’s a 50% chance of showers on Monday. In the week ending August 18th’s USDA’S crop report, 39% of farmers reported their corn, “fair” and 15 percent, “poor”.
Farmers reported soybean conditions similar with 40% “fair” and 15% reporting, “poor”.
