SPRINGFIELD – A coalition representing Illinois law enforcement leadership has issued a statement regarding action taken by the State Senate on criminal justice legislation during the lame-duck session. Coalition leaders say House Bill 163 and House Bill 3653, is a betrayal of the public trust that gives more advantage to criminals than it does the police. More than 112,000 Illinoians signed a petition to oppose said bills.
The following is a statement issued by the Illinois Law Enforcement Coalition:
“Thank you to the more than 100,000 citizens who have helped us to take a stand to protect our communities. Your monumental support is sending a clear message that continued police protection, and not politics, needs to be the focus of the Illinois General Assembly. But the fight is far from over, so we encourage anyone who values community safety to join us by signing this online petition.”
The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) State Lodge, FOP Labor Council, FOP Chicago Lodge 7, Illinois Sheriffs’ Association and the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police have formed the Illinois Law Enforcement Coalition and have been working on these strategies since summer to improve community safety and enhance the trust between community members and law enforcement.
