LOSTANT – A ten vehicle crash that closed I-39 in both directions on Saturday was triggered by a grass fire. According to the Illinois State Police, they say around 2:20 PM near milepost 40 in the northbound lanes a chain reaction collision involving a tractor-trailer and nine passenger vehicles occurred due to low visibility from smoke blowing across the roadway. Authorities say eight were transported to area hospitals, with three individuals suffering from what were described as serious injuries. The interstate was shut down in both directions in Marshall County six hours for the investigation.
